Soudal-QuickStep’s lead-out for Paul Magnier went awry when the Frenchman was separated on the final corner from other riders, leaving Lidl-Trek to dictate the sprint for the GC leader.

A breakaway of six riders formed with around 70km to go in the 193.5km third day of racing, but they never gained more than two minutes across lumpy terrain and their day out front ended with 4km to go.

Milan strengthened his hold on the yellow leader’s jersey by 18 seconds over Magnier, and is now another 2 seconds ahead of Hobbs, who moved into the top three.

The big difference for Magnier was his finish outside the top 10 on the final sprint, as he lost a full 10 seconds to Milan.

The big winner on the day was Fabio Christen (Pinarello Q36.5), who had been part of the day’s breakaway, and moved up 29 spots in GC to fourth overall, now 24 seconds down on the leader.

Bright, clear skies saw the temperatures rise for a warm day on the road, and the peloton was hot on the wheels of the first duo to strike, making the catch another 25km on. A few other riders fired more attacks, though the elastic was tight and none of the moves held.

With 145km to go, Dries De Bondt (Jayco AlUla), Jakub Kaczmarek (Poland) and Enzo Paleni (Groupama-FDJ United) formed a trio that escaped the peloton. A few kilometres on, Van der Hoorn was on the offensive again, and his move was countered with teammate Jasper De Buyst and Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek), with 45 seconds to close to the three leaders.

With 135km to go, the six came together for a short time, with Van der Hoorn, De Bondt and Paleni surging away as they arrived at the Skwierzyna intermediate sprint.

With 95km to go, Van der Hoorn eased ahead of his companions to grab the points at the Sprint Prime at Międzyrzecz, with the margin to the peloton hovering around one minute.

Since the gap wasn’t insurmountable, a few riders accelerated to join the front trio – Pinarello Q36.5 duo Sjoerd Bax and Fabio Christen with Matteo Sobrero. The new lead group flew through the next intermediate sprint at Świebodzin, 69km remaining until the next ripple in the stage for the sprint in Sulechów..

Behind, Soudal-QuickStep and EF Education-EasyPost did the bulk of the work in the chase, but the gap began to grow to 1:35. The more rolling terrain on the back half of the day seemed to be taking a toll on the leaders, as the needle turned in the other direction with 30km to go and the gap dipped to just under one minute.

Arriving to the one climb for the mountains classification points, a third-category in Przytok, the breakaway had just 26 seconds in their account. The ascent was only 4.1% for 1.1km, but caused a disruption in the tempo of the leaders, nonetheless, and the peloton seemed to sense the opportunity, closing the gap to 20 seconds once across the summit and only 12km to the finish in Zielona Góra.

Once on the wide, paved roads outside the city centre with 6km to go, the peloton could see the breakaway. One by one, the lead faded for the breakaway, leaving the final four kilometres for lead-out teams to do their work, notably Lidl-Trek to work for the yellow jersey.

Stage 4 on Thursday heads to high ground, 176 kilometres that has three categorized climbs and the final 1km wall at Orlinek in Karpacz. The short but stiff uphill finish has become iconic, with Alberto Contador, Matej Mohoric and Paul Lapeira winning in the past.
