The Yellow Tie, the highly-anticipated biographical drama starring Sean Bean and John Malkovich, has confirmed its UK release date. And in even better news, fans won’t have to wait too long!
The real-life drama depicts the life of Sergiu Celibidache, a Romanian composer and conductor whose career took him across Europe. He is portrayed by Ewan Horrocks, Ben Schnetzer and Malkovich across three periods of his life.
Billed as a “sweeping, sumptuous, generation-spanning biopic”, the film has been directed by Serge Ioan Celebidachi, the composer’s son. The filmmaker has also co-written the screenplay with James Olivier.

The Yellow Tie has already proven to be a huge success in Romania, and UK viewers only have a couple of months to wait before they can watch the drama unfold, with the film coming to cinemas on 9 October.
In addition to Malkovich and Bean, the latter of whom portrays Demostene Celibidache, the cast includes Anton Lesser, Charlie Rowe and Tamzin Merchant. Kate Phillips and Miranda Richardson, meanwhile, will both play the composer’s wife, Ioana.
As per the logline, the “epic true story” follows the “legendary conductor” from a childhood spent under “draconian authority” to Berlin, where he hones his craft. The outbreak of war, however, is a great “struggle” in his adult years.
“With the world collapsing around him, Sergiu must evade death and starvation to cement his place in the world of classical music, but risks being torn apart by a relentless pursuit for perfection that could overshadow his legacy forever,” it continues.

The biopic is described as a “uniquely personal tale of family”, and both a “gripping portrait of a genius’ ascent to the pinnacle of art against a background of oppression, bigotry and war”, and a “passionate plea for preserving an artform that stirs the soul”.
Though the biographical drama hasn’t been widely reviewed, early assessments have been positive, with Shadows on the Wall calling it “fantastic”. FilmHounds, meanwhile, dubbed it an “epic biopic” with “pitch-perfect performances”.
The Yellow Tie is released in UK cinemas on 9 October.
