Jack Welsby has been named in a St Helens 21-man squad for the first time since May and the full-back could be set for a return today against Huddersfield Giants.

England full-back Welsby limped off against Hull KR in late May and was initially ruled out for 16 weeks, however, he’s managed to recover far quicker to the point he could feature today.

Both Welsby and Deon Cross were named to the 21-man squad although Cross played on Thursday for the reserves so isn’t expected to feature today.

Saints take on a Huddersfield side who are finally finding form, winning four of their last seven despite still missing spine stars Niall Evalds, Tui Lolohea and Adam Clune.

St Helens know that a win will even move them into contention for a second-place finish and an all-important home semi-final given Wigan Warriors’ loss to Hull KR on Friday night.

Here’s how both St Helens and Huddersfield Giants could line up.

St Helens predicted team

Wellens wouldn’t commit to exactly where or how much Welsby would play but he did insist that his number one would feature and that could be off the bench, particularly given how well the spine has performed of late.

Tristan Sailor has looked comfortable at full-back and the pairing of Moses Mbye and Jonny Lomax have started to click meaning Welsby may be used as the interchange half in a move that might see Mbye spell at hooker to give Daryl Clark a breather.

Both James Bell and Joe Batchelor could come into the side after Curtis Sironen and Jake Wingfield dropped out through HIA and ankle issues respectively.

Predicted St Helens XIII: Tristan Sailor; Kyle Feldt, Harry Robertson, Mark Percival, Owen Dagnall; Jonny Lomax, Moses Mbye; Alex Walmsley, Daryl Clark, Matty Lees; Matt Whitley, Joe Batchelor, Morgan Knowles

Predicted Interchanges: Jack Welsby, Agnatius Paasi, George Delaney, James Bell

Huddersfield Giants predicted team

Luke Robinson could name an unchanged lineup, a luxury that he hasn’t had all that often this season but with the recent form and no injuries from last week, it is possible.

Tom Burgess was 18th man last week though so the question around whether he will return is a big one given the big money that he arrived on.

With such an impactful bench of Golding, English, King and Wilson last week, it’s hard to see Burgess forcing his way in so the ex-NRL man could be left out again.

Predicted Huddersfield Giants XIII: George Flanagan Jr; Jacob Gagai, Taane Milne, Jake Bibby, Sam Halsall; Kieran Rush, Matt Frawley; Fenton Rogers, Zac Woolford, Tristan Powell; Harry Rushton, Joe Greenwood, Leroy Cudjoe

Predicted Interchanges: Ash Golding, Matty English, George King, Oliver Wilson
