Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet has confirmed that ‘conversations remain very open’ regarding the future of winger Abbas Miski, who has been ruled out for the entirety of the 2026 season due to salary cap restrictions.
It’s a bizarre situation that has emerged at Wigan with Miski, who has not and will not play a game for the Warriors’ first team in 2026, all due to the salary cap.
The Lebanon international suffered an injury in last year’s Grand Final defeat to Hull KR and that would rule him out for the start of the season, with Wigan soon deciding not to play the 31-year-old because of the salary cap.
Speaking back in May to confirm Miski’s situation, Peet said: “We decided some time ago not to use him on our salary cap and allocate funds elsewhere.”
By not playing a senior game, it means that Miski’s wage does not count on the £2.1 million salary cap, with the Warriors able to blood in a number of other younger players as a result of that.
Speaking to media on Wednesday to offer an update on the winger, Peet again affirmed: “As I’ve said before Abbas won’t play first-team for us this year because of the salary cap situation. He’s training hard, he’s fit and I thought he looked excellent in the reserves game at the weekend.”
It had been hoped that another Super League club may loan Miski in, something Peet conceded he had anticipated: “I was expecting a club to put their hand up and take Abbas on loan but that’s not happened so he’ll just keep doing what he’s doing, prepare himself the best he can and we’ll decide week to week whether he plays reserves or not.”

As for why no loan materialised, the Wigan boss added: “I suppose a right offer from the right club for all parties.”

Now fit and firing, Miski will be using his games in the reserves to remain at the peak of his fitness ahead of the World Cup, where he will likely start for Lebanon.
As for what comes beyond the World Cup and his future at Wigan, Peet confirmed that the winger is contracted through the end of the 2207 season.
“He’s contracted to the club. I’ve just had a good chat then. Conversations remain very open,” Peet admitted.
“It will be the outcome and resolution that is best for the club and Abbas as well. I’m sure one way or another we’ll have it sorted out before the end of the season.”
Having been sidelined at first through injury and then through matters beyond his control, Peet admitted that there have been no signs of frustration from the winger, during what has clearly not been an easy 2026 season for him.
Peet said: “If he has been [frustrated], he’s managed it really well. He’s remained a part of the group, training on the field all the time.
“His body hasn’t been in a condition to play all year. Up to May it was about recovering from injury and getting himself the best he can condition wise and ready to play. Now he’s at that point, he’s adding to training all the time.”
