The change is part of an expanded scheme to boost recycling services across Tendring and will take effect from October.
Under the new scheme, residents will be able to recycle glass at the kerbside using the additional green box.
Adrian Smith, cabinet member for environment at Tendring Council, said: “This is an exciting change to our recycling offer, meaning people can recycle glass directly from their home – making it much easier for residents.
“With boxes being delivered this week by our contractor Veolia, we are now gearing up for this change to come into effect in early October.”
The expanded collections will also include a wider range of plastics, such as pots, tubs and trays, as well as juice cartons.
The changes follow a new contract between the council and waste contractor Veolia, aimed at improving services and meeting new legal requirements.
Most households will see no change to their collection schedule, other than the addition of glass recycling during their green week.
A small number of properties will have their red and green weeks swapped, while residents in Point Clear will see a change to their collection day.
Councillor Smith encouraged residents to read and keep the information delivered with the new box.
He said: “I’d urge everyone to read and keep the material provided with the additional box as it contains lots of useful information including your recycling calendar and top tips on what you can recycle too.”
Although glass collections do not begin until October, the extra box can already be used for other recyclable materials.
