Doctor Who icon David Tennant is officially set to return for more journeys in the Whoniverse, alongside The Sarah Jane Adventures star Anjli Mohindra.
Tennant is returning for 12 new Big Finish stories, which will see him reprise his role as the Tenth Doctor, while Mohindra will join him for the first three, returning to the role of Rani Chandra.
Rani, who first graced our screens in 2008 (feeling old yet?), is now following in Sarah Jane’s (Elisabeth Sladen) footsteps, forging her own career in journalism.
When she encounters the Doctor, she hops on board the TARDIS, with the pair grappling with cryptids in modern-day Cumbria, dealing with a crisis at the coronation of Elizabeth I, and crashing the set of a 1970s sci-fi show.
Mohindra said: “It’s always such a delight to go back into playing Rani – she was one of the first proper parts I played, so there’s a real sense of familiarity.
“It does feel like an inevitability that her and the Doctor’s paths would cross. Sarah Jane was such a special person to both of them, the love they have for her is really similar, and that’s a real shared thing that gives them a shortcut.”

Producer and script editor Matt Fitton added: “The Tenth Doctor and Rani Chandra feels like a TARDIS team that was always meant to happen! United by their love for Sarah Jane Smith, it’s only fitting that Rani gets to follow in the footsteps of her mentor and venture out into time and space.
“She runs into the Doctor in Cumbria as she investigates sightings of strange creatures for a potential podcast – I wonder what happens with that? – and is soon whisked away to amazing adventures. Like Sarah, the Doctor sees Rani’s potential immediately – the pair soon run into his wife-to-be Princess Elizabeth, and a very familiar 1970s TV sci-fi show.”
Tennant played the Doctor from 2005 to 2010, returning as the Fourteenth Doctor in 2022 and 2023.
He previously said of returning to the role: “Big Finish makes it dangerously easy – you turn up, have a lovely time, and suddenly you’ve saved the universe again.”
