Some of the top youth riders in the country have come away with two Irish titles from the opening day of the Youth National Road Championships in Co Cork today.

Indeed, four riders won gold in the main categories at the championships in both the TT and road races today; Emer Heverin and Rían McCrystal best of the U16s while Katie Turner and Tom Lane were the double gold winners in the U15 category.

Lilly McDermott (TC Racing) was similarly impressive; winning gold in the U13 TT and then also claiming victory in the combined U14-U13 girls road race, marking herself out as one to watch in the future.

The biggest winning margin of the day was that of Heverin (All human-VeloRevolution) in the U16-U15 girls road race. At the end of 46.5km of racing in Knocknagree, Co Cork, she was a whopping six minutes ahead of the opposition.

Ysabella Huele (TC Racing) finished 2nd, at 6:11. Katie Turner (Orwell Wheelers) was 3rd, and 1st U15, at 7:00.

In the U16 boys race, a group of seven forged clear of the others in the field and fought it out for the medals. McCrystal (Bear Cycling) claimed victory in a sprint, with James Logue (Panduit Carrick Wheelers) in 2nd and Caleb McGreevy (VC Glendale) in 3rd place.

In the U15 boys race, Lane (Dan Morrissey Pissei) took a solo win, finishing 35 seconds up on his team mate Bryan Cullen. Just over four minutes after the winner crossed the line, Kieran Mulvaney, of host club Sliabh Luachra CC, won a three-up sprint for bronze. He edged out his team mate, Conor Lynch, and Evan Byrne (Carlow RCC).
