Scottie Scheffler and Rory Mcllroy have contrasting views on LIV Golf players returning to the PGA Tour.

Rory McIlroy did not mince his words at the BMW Championship on Wednesday.

McIlroy weighed in on the prospect of LIV Golf players returning to the PGA Tour and whether they would offer additional value to the US circuit by posing his own blunt question.

“I’d argue, have they brought value to LIV?” McIlroy said. “I think the PGA Tour is in a really good spot.”

McIlroy clearly believes LIV players, including Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm, missed the boat when declining PGA Tour comebacks earlier this season via the contrived Returning Members Program which facilitated Brooks Koepka’s return.

“I’m not part of these discussions, but I’m pretty sure they’re not going to be welcomed back straight away,” McIlroy added.

“If they were offered this Returning Member Program back in February, the one that Brooks took, maybe. But that has come and gone. I think it was said at the time that the deal that they might get going forward, if they do decide to come back, isn’t going to be as good as the one that Brooks got. I’d say it’s going to be a tough, tough road back.”

Like McIlroy, Scheffler also believes it won’t be an easy path back for LIV players, who could be looking for a place to play if the cash-strapped league does not continue next season without the backing of the Saudi Public Investment Fund. The world no.1 said there has to be “some sort of penalties” for those who made the switch, but clearly sees the value in integration in the longer term.

“When we talk about the best players, LIV has a few players that are really good,” Scheffler said.

“I think the depth that we have on our Tour is bit unmatched, but I think when you look at the higher levels of LIV Golf there’s definitely some players that would provide a lot of value to the Tour, and guys that I love competing against as well.”

Scheffer added: “But having those guys come back and competing with whatever happens with LIV, whether those guys want to leave, I mean, you got to ask them.

“For me, being able to compete against the best players in the world – there’s certainly some guys on that tour that can compete out here – and I look forward to the chance to compete with them more often.”
