Ridley returns to our screens this evening, for another episode of murder mystery, intriguing sub-plots and of course, plenty of Adrian Dunbar singing.

Tonight brings the second episode ‘The Hollow Tree’, which as the name suggests sees Alex Ridley and DI Carol Farman investigate the murder of a woman found dead in the hollow of a tree. She’s soon identified as Kathy, a woman who went missing six years ago, and in order to help them crack the case, they bring back disgraced detective Jean Dixon (Elizabeth Berrington) who worked on the case the first time around.

However, Jean has demons of her own she’s fighting and soon finds herself in the crosshairs of the investigation. But this isn’t the first time we’ve seen Jean in the show, she previously appeared in season one. As the show hasn’t been on screen for three years though, we can be forgiven for slightly forgetting what her character did, and so this is your crucial reminder about who Jean Dixon in Ridley is.

Who is Jean Dixon in Ridley?

Jean Dixon is a former police detective who used to work with Ridley and is pulled in to work with the team again, after one of her former disappearance cases results in a dead body six years later.

Kathy had gone missing and at the time Jean was convinced Kathy’s partner was responsible for it. During the case she got close to Kathy’s daughter Sam and after the discovery of Kathy’s body, Sam only wants to talk to Jean.

However, not only is Jean dealing with the case coming back into her life, but she’s also balancing her new partner and her daughter Molly not getting along.

What happened with Jean Dixon in Ridley season 1?

We first met Jean Dixon in the very first episode of Ridley, where she goes to visit Ridley at his home and tells him of the murder of Jesse Halpin. Ridley originally interviewed Halpin in connection with the disappearance of a three year old girl Zoe.

Ridley and Jean talk about the present, including Jean’s mentions of grandchildren, which aren’t brought up in season two.

The pair later meet up after Ridley gets involved with the case of Jesse Halpin. Jean had originally run the Zoe case and had arrested a man named Preston. However, after Ridley dug further into the case this time around, Ridley found a number of mistakes Jean made and called her out on it, including that she had arrested Preston in order to fit her narrative.

At the café, Jean confessed she had to make an arrest, telling Ridley: “I did what I had to do.” Before adding: “It was a moment..It was a misstep.”

Jean then asked Ridley to let the case go “for old time’s sake”. Ridley told her he couldn’t and that there would be an inquiry into what she had done all those years ago.

And with that Jean left the café and it was the last we saw of her…until now.
