After a bit of a wait, viewers could rejoice as Ludwig finally returned to the BBC earlier this week as the highly-anticipated second season premiered on both BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Thursday (20 August).

The latest chapter of the beloved detective drama sees John Taylor (David Mitchell) in his new role as a crime consultant, though he still works with Lucy Betts-Taylor (Anna Maxwell Martin) as they seek to find James.

Written and created by Mark Brotherhood, the series introduces some new faces for its latest saga, with Mark Bonnar, Sian Clifford, Karl Pilkington, Stephen Merchant and Rose Ayling-Ellis all appearing.

The second season premiered with a single episode on BBC One on Thursday, though eager fans and armchair detectives could get ahead of the game by streaming the first three instalments via BBC iPlayer.

Still, it is perhaps disappointing for viewers that the entire season isn’t available to stream in full yet, but we do have news on that front, as the BBC has confirmed the full release schedule for the second season.

What did we say about Ludwig season 2?david mitchell, ludwig series 2

In Digital Spy’s review of the second season premiere, we praised the “gentle humour” that is imbued in the series, with Mitchell’s performance being praised for making John “endearing” rather than “irritating”.

“The Cambridge setting, where the show was filmed, also retains that slightly quaint quality that makes Ludwig stand out from other detective dramas,” we added, noting the “comfort” of the location.
