Wiltshire Police have said that they have received a “concerning report” about the incident on The Crammer in Devizes, during which the group was reported to have been targeting the birds as they rested on the water.

The force has now sought to remind people that while catapults are legal to own and buy in the UK, using them to harm wildlife may constitute a criminal offence.

A spokesperson also said that anyone seen carrying a catapult openly without a “lawful excuse” could see the item seized by officers.

Posting on social media on August 21, the spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We have recently received concerning reports about the use of a catapult at The Crammer in Devizes.

“A member of the public reported witnessing a group of young males using a catapult and appearing to target ducks resting on the water.

“We would like to remind the public of the laws surrounding catapults and slingshots:

“Catapults (slingshots) are legal to own and purchase in the UK. However, carrying one in a public place without a lawful reason may result in prosecution under the Prevention of Crime Act 1953 if it is considered an offensive weapon.

“Using a catapult to harm wildlife or damage property may constitute criminal offences, including breaches of animal welfare legislation, the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, the Wild Mammals (Protection) Act 1996, and criminal damage laws.

“Carrying a catapult openly, or without a clear lawful excuse, could lead to it being seized by police and may result in prosecution.

“We ask parents and guardians to be aware of their children’s whereabouts and activities, particularly during the school holidays.

“Wiltshire Police takes reports of this nature seriously. If you witness someone actively using a catapult to harm wildlife or putting people at risk, please call 999.”
