Gaerth O’Neill leads the way at the Bob Crilly Classic, winning the main event ahead of some qiality riders competing for UCI Continental teams this year (Photo: Toby Watson)

Gareth O’Neill (Athlete Nutrition Coach HD) has won the main event at the Bob Crilly Classic, taking the victory ahead of a high quality group at the end of 102km of racing in Glengormley, Co Antrim, today.

O’Neill (29) adds his win to several other victories already this season, though he has also scored a frustrating number of 2nd places, including in major events such as the Shay Elliott Classic.

However, despite going up against very strong riders in the final today, including several riding for UCI Continental teams this season, O’Neill overwhelmed them in the closing stages for the victory.

He topped the podium in the main event from Liam Crowley (Team Vorarlberg) and Killian O’Brien (Petrolike), who were 2nd and 3rd respectively, in the Phoenix Cycling Club promotion.

A special mention goes to Toby Sweetman, the VC Glendale rider who lost his father, Craig Sweetman, in recent weeks. He took a fine 4th place today and showed the kind of form that netted him a stage victory at the Junior Tour of Ireland in July.

More to come.
