The former St Helens captain, who has spent his entire professional career with his hometown club, revealed this week that the current campaign will be his last, bringing the curtain down on one of the most successful careers in Super League history.
Current and former team-mates, opponents and the club itself were quick to recognise Lomax’s contribution to the sport.
Saints led the tributes, describing their long-serving skipper as “one of the all-time greats”.”
Fellow Saints stalwart, long-serving prop Alex Walmsley wrote: ” Well done brother.
That sentiment was echoed by Mark Percival, who shared this message in tribute to his long-time team-mate: “Unbelievable my mate a true legend.”
Former Saints player Sione Mata’utia added: “The ultimate my bro, grateful for the times we had love yah JLo.”
Tommy Makinson simply described Lomax as a “legend”.
Former England captain Jamie Peacock paid tribute to Lomax’s achievements at both club and international level.
He wrote: “Outstanding career Jonny. Should be really proud of everything you achieved as an individual and with the club. Absolute pleasure working with you with England.”
Former Saints ace Morgan Knowles said: “Legend Jonny, you are one of a kind mate. “Pleasure to of shared so many memories with you.”
Young half-back George Whitby described Lomax as an inspiration.
He wrote: “An unbelievable career mate, congrats on all your achievements and been a huge honour to be able to play alongside you and share special moments on and off the field for a small part on what’s been an outstanding career. An inspiration mate.”
Warrington Wolves and England star George Williams, who enjoyed many memorable battles with Lomax over the years, added: “Congratulations on everything you’ve achieved pal. “It’s been a pleasure to play with and against you over many years. Some career that.”
Saints teammate Curtis Sironen stated: “Legend. Honour to run out in the red vee with you mate. Competitor.”
Young Saints forward Jake Wingfield posted: “Unreal career, had a massive impact in my career up to now, couldn’t thank you enough.”
Former Saints half back partner Theo Fages said: “Congrats legend. And thank you for all those times again, you’re the best.”
Wigan and England second row John Bateman posted: “Congratualtiona pal, great career and great achievements throughout. Some great memories playing alongside you and not so good ones playing against you.”
