Leigh Leopards boss Adrian Lam has shared his “realist” approach to the final three games of the season, with the club’s hope of a top four finish firmly in reach.

The Leopards travel to Huddersfield Giants tonight, with a win for them and a St Helens loss against Leeds enough to confirm their place in the top six.

Leigh have won their last three matches, and eight out of their last nine, showing they are in some great form, and at the right time of the season too.

Last week, they racked up their biggest win in Super League history with a 62-10 thrashing of Bradford Bulls, a performance Lam described as “absolutely brilliant.”

However, the hot streak cannot be taken for granted, and the Leopards boss knows that they need to keep focused to maintain their run, especially against a Huddersfield side who have won four of their last five games.

Lam spoke to the press this week, revealing where he thinks the club are at with three weeks of the season to go.

“He said: “I think we’re in a good place as a club, probably the best place we’ve been all year.

“We’ve obviously still got a couple of players out in Bailey Hodgson and Tesi Niu that have been the long-term injuries. But with so many things that have gone on this year, I think as a club, we had a great win away at Leeds there on a really big night for us, and then I wanted to see a response from that and to show that we understand where we’re at as a club.

“The challenge was: can we be professional for an 80-minute performance against Bradford on last Friday night, and I thought we were absolutely brilliant.

“I’m a realist as well and know that the minute you fall in love with yourself as a coach or as a team, things can go south. It’s about making sure we keep our feet grounded, understand the hard work we’ve put in to get to here and the hard work that’s left to keep improving as a team.”

On tonight’s opponents, Lam added: “It’s going to be a pretty close game, and we’re going to prepare ourselves that it’s going to go for 80 minutes. We’ve got to make sure that we’re focused and professional with an 80-minute performance with consistency.”

Leigh Leopards close to securing top four finish

Whilst Leigh can guarantee a finals spot this evening, a place in the six isn’t what they are aiming for. The club want to give themselves a home play-off game, and to achieve that, they need to finish in the top four.

Currently, Wakefield Trinity sit just above them in fourth spot, with only points difference putting them ahead. Leigh will temporarily go fourth with a win, but Trinity take on York Knights tomorrow, so are expected to retain their spot.

“We’ve worked really hard to get to this position,” Lam said on the top four goal. “It’s been a really tough year, to be honest.

“We feel that if we can win three games in a row, that’ll put us with a home [play-off].

“It’s a tough job. I think Huddersfield away is probably going to be as tough a game as any we’ve had this year, then obviously St Helens at home and Wakefield at home.

“It’s not a guarantee, but knowing that if we get this right, the season and how it unfolds is in our hands.”
