Heron native to North America spotted in Herefordshire

The great blue heron was photographed by Victor Talmaciu at Bodenham Lakes Nature Reserve.

This bird, known for its size and fishing abilities, is the largest and most common heron in North America.

Mr Talmaciu snapped the tall, long-legged bird over the weekend.

The herons are known to frequent coastlines, marshes, and the shores of ponds and streams, where they display their expert fishing skills.

They are often seen wading or standing still for extended periods, using their long necks and sharp bills to snare aquatic prey.

While fish is a staple in their diet, great blue herons are also known to eat mice, insects, and other small creatures.

The bird’s size, ranging from 3.2 to 4.5 feet, and wide wingspan of 5.5 to 6.6 feet make it a remarkable sight in flight.

Despite their solitary hunting nature, great blue herons are known to nest in colonies.

They usually choose tall trees but sometimes opt for low shrubs.
