George Whitby has undergone ACL surgery with the St Helens playmaker one of two Super League men to have the procedure in recent days.

York Knights’ Matty English is the other man and both have taken to Instagram to confirm the surgery but also to issue defiant messages ahead of their recovery, whilst also even connecting with each other.

For Whitby, it’s his second knee surgery in 2026, though this one will have a far longer recovery time with the young playmaker not likely to return until at least midway through the 2027 season.

In his first game back from surgery on his right knee, Whitby pulled up and left the field with what ended up being an ACL tear on his left knee, and he has now had surgery on that.

As for English, he was in his first week of training at York Knights after joining them on loan when he suffered a training ground injury that also turned out to be an ACL tear.

The pair both posted their post-surgery updates two days ago, with Whitby even commenting on English’s post, stating: “All the best my mate, in it together.”

English, who is believed to have signed permanently with York for 2027, admitted in his brief post that 2026 had marked his ‘most challenging season yet’, adding: “2027 can not come quick enough.”

As for Whitby, who underwent second knee surgery in the last two months, he thanked those involved and asserted that he will come back stronger, just as interim coach Eamon O’Carroll said upon confirming the news.

Whitby said: “A devastating end to my 2026 season. A frustrating year but I’m more determined than ever to attack this setback with a positive mindset and I’m more motivated than ever to come back stronger and better than before.”

The 20-year-old also thanked family, friends, teammates, and all those at the club, as well as the fans, adding: “I’ll do all I possibly can to continue supporting the boys in any capacity as there’s still plenty to play for and aiming to finish the season on a high. Thanks again for all the love and support and i’ll see you all in 2027.”
