A taxi driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by drug driving after a pedestrian was struck by a private hire car in Liverpool and died.
A 26-year-old woman was hit by a Toyota Voxy taxi on the city-bound carriageway of Aigburth Road, between Fulwood Road and Larkfield Road, Merseyside Police said.
She was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her family have been informed.
A 41-year-old man, who was driving the taxi and stopped at the scene, is being questioned in police custody on suspicion of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving whilst under the influence of drugs.
Det Sgt Andy Roper said: “First and foremost my thoughts and those of my team remain with the woman’s family at this sad time.
“Road death causes devastation for all those involved and it is our absolute priority to get answers for her family.”
He said the force was examining CCTV from the area, and appealed for witnesses, adding: “Aigburth Road is a very busy road and we know at that time there would have been a large volume of vehicles including buses, taxis and delivery drivers, together with pedestrians, in the area.”
