Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary recorded 492 reports of deer being struck on the county’s roads up to the end of August.
Collisions often increase during the rutting season, which runs from September to November.
Deer vehicle collisions can cause serious damage to vehicles and may result in human injuries or fatalities.
Inspector Stuart Ross said: “We do appreciate that there will be situations whereby the public are caught up in deer collisions that can cause real fear and panic.”
He advises motorists to call 999 immediately if they hit a deer, and to avoid approaching or handling the animal.
He added: “We don’t want you to approach the deer, and have seen that anecdotally, whereby people are approaching the deer, they are handling the deer, and they are actually on occasions putting them in their vehicle.”
