The osprey, one of Britain’s most impressive raptors, was photographed above Bodenham in Herefordshire by Victor Talmaciu.

Ospreys are known for their remarkable fishing skills and dramatic aerial dives.

Mr Talmaciu said: “Osprey was back at Bodenham this morning, and he’s got some ‘friends’ with him.”

With a wingspan of up to 1.8 metres, the osprey is easily recognised by its long, narrow wings, white underside, and the dark stripe that runs through its eye.

Often called the “fish hawk,” it feeds almost exclusively on fish, hovering above water before plunging feet-first to catch its prey with specially adapted talons.

Ospreys are long-distance migrants, spending winters in Africa and returning to the UK each spring to breed.

Once extinct as a breeding bird in Britain due to persecution and egg collecting, ospreys have made a strong comeback thanks to conservation efforts.

Breeding populations are now firmly established in Scotland and are gradually expanding into England and Wales.
