Sanju Samson’s inclusion in India’s Asia Cup squad is one of the talking points ahead of the announcement by the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar.

Popular commentator Harsha Bhogle thinks Sanju will make the 15-member squad on the basis of his performance in the South Africa tour last year, where he scored three centuries.

“Sanju had a spectacular tour in South Africa,” Bhogle said in his preview show on his YouTube channel.

Sanju could not replicate his form in the five-match home series against England early this year, but Bhogle thinks the 30-year-old Kerala wicket-keeper batter has “done enough” to earn the call.

Meanwhile, some pundits have claimed that India’s Test captain Shubman Gill might be overlooked, considering the wealth of T20-only players available for selection.

A Sanju Samson-Abhishek Sharma opening combination is the most popular one discussed by fans on social media, while having Tilak Varma bat at No 3 is also regarded as a no-brainer.

While Varun Chakravarthy has nailed his spot in the squad, the option of an additional spinner could be weighed between Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi.

Sanju was overlooked for the Champions Trophy (50-over), which was held in Pakistan and the UAE. The Asia Cup will be played in the UAE from September 9 to 28. India are in Group A alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, the hosts and Oman.
