Pauline, a retired intensive care nurse from the Tarporley area of Cheshire, had previously enjoyed an active lifestyle, regularly playing golf as well as caring for her friend Judy, who has muscular dystrophy.
However, she began suffering with back pain after playing a round of golf on particularly uneven and hilly ground.
Initially believing she had simply strained her back, Pauline rested and tried a number of treatments while continuing to remain active.
She said: “I went out fit and came home unfit.
“I thought I had just badly strained my back. I carried on because that’s the sort of person I am.
“Eventually it became more difficult and then one day I just couldn’t carry on.”
Pauline later discovered she had suffered a fractured vertebra, which contributed to a spinal condition that left her living with constant pain.
As her condition worsened, she became unable to sleep in her bed and instead spent nine weeks sleeping in a chair.
She said: “It reached the point where something had to be done.”
Drawing on her experience as a former intensive care nurse, Pauline began researching spinal specialists before arranging a consultation with consultant spinal surgeon Mr Rath at Spire Yale Hospital in Wrexham.

She said: “I looked into my options and felt confident from the moment I met Mr Rath.
“When you’ve been in so much pain, you just want your life back.”
Following scans, Pauline was told surgery offered the best chance of relieving pressure on the affected nerve.
Three weeks after her consultation, she underwent endoscopic spinal surgery at Spire Yale Hospital.
Pauline said she did not hesitate about going ahead with the procedure despite being aware of the risks associated with surgery.
She said: “I trusted Mr Rath completely.”
She said the results were noticeable immediately after the operation.
“I woke up and the pain down my leg had gone. It was unbelievable,” Pauline said.
After spending one night in hospital, she returned home, where Judy immediately noticed a difference.
Pauline said: “When I walked into the lounge, Judy looked at me and said, ‘You’re standing up straight.’ That said everything really.”
She has since returned to walking her dog, gardening and carrying out household jobs without needing pain medication.
Pauline has also returned to the golf course, something she previously feared she might not be able to do again.
She said: “I can’t thank Mr Rath and all his team at Spire enough. The care I received was exceptional from start to finish.
“Being able to get back out on the golf course again means the world to me, and I will always be grateful for everything they’ve done.”
Pauline said she hoped sharing her experience could help others facing similar health problems.

She added: “It can be frightening when someone tells you that you need spinal surgery, but for me, it was a journey worth taking.
“I had the choice of living with pain or doing something about it, and I’m so glad I did.
“If my story helps somebody else make an informed decision or gives them hope that things can get better, then it’s worth sharing.”
Mr Rath, consultant spinal surgeon at Spire Yale Hospital, said: “It has been wonderful to see Pauline regain her independence and return to the activities she enjoys.
“Endoscopic spinal surgery is a minimally invasive technique that uses a very small incision, helping to reduce muscle damage, post-operative discomfort and recovery time for suitable patients.
“Pauline’s outcome highlights the benefits this approach can offer when treating certain spinal conditions.”
