Super League

Three Super League clubs welcomed five figure crowds in round 22 in what was another well-attended round of fixtures.

Unfortunately, only five of the six scheduled games went ahead, with Salford Red Devils pulling out of their clash with Wakefield Trinity at the Salford Community Stadium. Salford supporters still made their way to the stadium, though, as they got together to protest against the ownership of the club.

The round undoubtedly belonged to Hull KR, who are now six points clear at the top of the Super League table after beating Wigan Warriors 10-6. The Robins were dominant, something the scoreline doesn’t really reflect, and they are now within touching distance of claiming a second major trophy this season in the shape of the League Leaders’ Shield.

Leigh Leopards missed the opportunity to move to within one point of Wigan as they lost 18-12 at the MKM Stadium against Hull FC. St Helens and Leeds Rhinos are within striking distance of the Warriors now, though, sitting two points back after their respective wins over Huddersfield Giants and Castleford Tigers.

Warrington Wolves were the other winners in round 22 as they managed to come from behind to beat Catalans Dragons and keep their extremely faint hopes of claiming a play-off spot alive.

Super League round 22 attendances

The biggest crowd of the week unsurprisingly came at the Brick Community Stadium as 20,218 piled in to watch Wigan take on Hull KR. A chunk of those fans were away supporters, who travelled in their thousands to watch the game, but the home ends were busy too, with the magnitude of the contest pulling in a big crowd.

Hull FC finished 11th last season with just three wins to their name all year, but 12 months on they are well and truly in the play-off race. However, while Hull recorded an attendance of 10,863, that’s below average by their standards with fixtures against Leigh drawing two of their four lowest attendances of the year.

Warrington Wolves welcomed a positive crowd of 10,740 to watch their clash with Catalans Dragons, while St Helens recorded an attendance of 9,826 against Huddersfield. Away supporters were in short supply at both games so that’s some going by both St Helens and Warrington.

Castleford Tigers recorded their second biggest attendance of the season against Leeds, but they couldn’t give their home fans anything to cheer, as they lost 64-4.
