It has been over three years since Benedict Cumberbatch last appeared as Doctor Strange in a MCU production. The actor has been confirmed as appearing in both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Originally it was unclear if his part would be more than a cameo. However, a new rumor suggests that Stephen Strange will play a major role in the events of both movies.

What is Doctor’s Strange role said to be in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars?

Scooper Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus reported that Cumberbatch’s role in Avengers: Doomsday will build on his last MCU appearance. That was in the post-credits scene of 2022’s Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. The brief scene showed Doctor Strange being confronted by the sorceress Clea (Charlize Theron) and leaving Earth to fix a new incursion.

Regarding Doctor Strange’s role in Avengers: Doomsday, Perez said it was “Exactly what he was asked to do. Fix an incursion… by any means necessary.”

Perez also reported that the movie would address what Doctor Strange and Clea had been up to between movies, but that Cumberbatch’s role in Secret Wars would be more substantial.

“This would be a good time to remind everyone that the flow of time is different in the Dark Dimension since it is basically nonexistent, Perez noted. “Even though it’ll have been 3 ½ – 4 years since Stephen Strange has been on Earth. Imagine how much time would have passed in the Dark Dimension?”

It should be noted that Charlize Theron has not been confirmed to be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday. However, this does not necessarily mean she won’t appear in the film. Then again, it is equally likely that Doctor Strange returns to Earth while Clea deals with matters elsewhere.

Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
