‘Whether it’s a photograph from a family day out, school event or simply spending time with friends, we’d love to see it’

Hull Museums has launched a public appeal asking residents to dig out their photo albums and share images showing what it was like growing up in the city. The call comes ahead of a major new exhibition set to open next year.
The upcoming exhibition, titled Hull’s Youth Stories, will highlight the experiences, memories and stories of young people across the city’s history. Teams are currently searching for photographs centered around the theme of ‘When We Were Younger’.
To help build the collection, a special drop-in scanning session will be held at Wilberforce House Museum on Saturday, September 19, running from 12 noon until 3pm. Residents are invited to bring along their original photographs, which will be digitally scanned on the spot and returned immediately so owners do not have to part with their cherished originals.
A selection of the submitted images will be chosen to feature in the final exhibition, creating a community-led snapshot of local childhood and youth throughout the decades. Frances Hodson, Community Curator of Social History said: “We know that some of the most powerful stories about Hull’s past are held in family photograph albums.

“We’re inviting people to share their memories and help us build a picture of what it has meant to be young in Hull across different generations. Whether it’s a photograph from a family day out, school event or simply spending time with friends, we’d love to see it.”
The scanning session is free to attend with no advance booking required. Anyone who is unable to attend on the day but would still like to submit photographs can contact the team directly by emailing Museums@hcandl.co.uk.
