Warrington Wolves beat Hull KR to book a Super League semi-final against Leeds Rhinos, though head coach Sam Burgess has been left bemoaning the fact his side only have a six-day turnaround.

Wire won 35-12 in convincing fashion to end the tenure of Willie Peters at Hull KR, with the win ensuring Warrington travel to Headingley on Friday night. However, Burgess has hit out at that turnaround time, arguing that it’s not enough, especially as hosts Leeds will have had two weeks’ rest before the game.

Speaking post-match on Sky Sports, Burgess said: “We’ve got a six-day turnaround which is nuts in finals time. You finish third and you get a six-day turnaround.

“It’s crackers. It’s absolutely crackers, but you’re barking up the wrong tree because no-one does anything about it. We’re looking forward to it. We’ll be ready for another good contest.”

Wire had finished level on points with Leeds, who came second, meaning points difference is what stopped Burgess’ side from placing second and earning the larger rest period.

Warrington Wolves urged to improve after wasteful display

In his assessment of the game, the Warrington boss spoke about it being a ‘strange’ 80 minutes, lamenting his side for struggling more against 12 men than 13, as well as the fact he felt they wasted changes.

“I’m proud of the group. It was a very strange game. A bit of a strange game, but pleased to come through and go to the next stage,” he said.

“I felt like we need to get better at attacking when we were playing against a team with 12. I thought we attacked a little bit better in the first half. In the first half as well, we really felt dominant and were pretty disappointed to be in at the scoreline that we went in.

“We left dead set two or three tries out there, a couple in the second half as well so we’ve just got to be mindful that precision is important. Over the course of a game, you have to be really mindful that you don’t give too many away.

“I’ve been around the game long enough to know that they add up, and you just can’t miss that many. The boys are calm about it but we just needed more precision. We could have finished the game much earlier.”

Speaking more on positives, he added: “I loved our effort and energy and tenacity to turn up, especially in the first half. I thought we were phenomenal.”

He also issued an injury update, confirming that Ewan Irwin was fine despite limping late on, something he claimed was a result of Hull KR putting late shots in on the young player.

Burgess said: “He’s got a bit of a target on him. It seems to hit him off the ball a little bit. He’ll be okay. This time of year, everyone wants to play, so they’ll all find a way to get on the field.”
