TWO tiny otters saved from an uncertain fate close to the edge of a busy Ross-shire trunk route now seem well on the road to recovery.

As reported by the Ross-shire Journal, the duo were spotted by an eagle-eyed woman on her way from Ullapool to attend the Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival earlier this month.

Because of the circumstances, they were nicknamed Bella and Drum and whisked to safety courtesy of some quick-thinking and teamwork by local activists.

They were spotted on the A835, south of Ullapool, near Leckmelm Gardens, by Ellie Macgregor.

She alerted Noel Hawkins, well-known locally as an ambassador for wildlife and his involvement with the award-winning environmental campaigning group, Ullapool Sea Savers.

With the help of Stephen Edwards who was out on Scottish Water work and Anne Falconer and Nigel Holmes, they were tracked close to the very busy road.

They were checked out at Conanvet and deemed to be suitable for care with the International Otter Survival Fund on Skye.

In a fresh update, that group said: “Bella and Drum have taken the next step in their Sanctuary journey, moving into a larger indoor enclosure at our new look specialist otter hospital facility. Their updated weights are 1.6kg for Bella, and 1.69kg for Drum, so they are gaining weight fast!”
