David Mitchell’s puzzle maker-turned-detective protagonist will return for a third season of Ludwig at the BBC, as the star teased more “brilliant mysteries” ahead for the show created by Mark Brotherhood.
Premiered in September 2024, the series follows Mitchell’s John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor, a reclusive puzzle maker who’s roped into the mystery of his twin brother, Cambridge Police DCI James Taylor’s disappearance.
John’s sister-in-law Lucy, played by Anna Maxwell-Martin, enlists his help to find James as the puzzle expert reluctantly agrees to pose as his brother and work his cases.

Season 2 premiered earlier this summer, with John’s real identity being exposed and his deductive abilities landing him a consultant job.
Ahead of the second chapter making the air, the BBC confirmed that Ludwig would be back for a third instalment as well as a Christmas special starring legendary Poirot star David Suchet.

Good news for fans of cosy crime as Ludwig will indeed return for a third season.

What is the plot of Ludwig season 3?

After season 2 introduced a new villain in Fleabag star Sian Clifford’s impenetrable MP Joanne Kemper, it’s safe to assume that John and Lucy’s investigation into some suspicious deaths will continue in season 3.
There’s a chance that the previously-announced Christmas special could reshuffle the cards ahead of season 3, but it seems more likely that the festive episode will be a one-off departure from the main story.
Mitchell and Martin stars alongside Suchet, as well as Jason Flemyng, Joe Wilkinson, Cathy Tyson, Alexandra Roach, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Rebekah Staton, Claire Price, Ariella Glaser and George Rainsford.
Set in Yorkshire, the episode sees John, Lucy and her son Henry (Dylan Hughes) arrive at a remote Christmas-themed hotel. When a blackout turns the getaway into a locked-room murder mystery, John investigates to find the killer.
Who’s in Ludwig season 3?

It’s pretty safe to assume that Mitchell will star in season 3, together with Martin and Hughes as Lucy and Henry.
Dipo Ola is expected to reprise the role of John’s detective pal, DCI Russell Carter, with Clifford also set to return as Kemper.
Ralph Ineson’s Chief Constable Ronan Ziegler, on the other hand, is not coming back after season 2 delivered a deadly twist, though Ludwig season 3 might welcome him back in some flashbacks.
When will Ludwig season 3 premiere?

There’s no word yet as to when Ludwig season 3 will air on BBC One, but it appears we’re looking at next year for more episodes.
DCI Carter star Ola revealed that filming on the third season would begin in September, saying that the second part of season 2 would lead up to “a really, really satisfying conclusion” ahead of the new storylines (via Radio Times).
He added that they would get to begin working on season three soon, saying: “In a couple of weeks’ time, we get to start.”
Ludwig seasons 1-2 are available to stream on BBC iPlayer. A third season is in production.
