Two schoolboys were detained by police after reports of anti-social behaviour in a busy park today, August 19. Officers were called to Stanley Park in Anfield following reports two boys were riding an electric bike precariously with families nearby.

Officers arrived and seized an electric bike and two 12-year-old boys were detained before being taken home to their parents. The arrests come after Merseyside Police launched Operation Gears in response to the illegal use of electric and electrically assisted bikes by criminals.

Criminals are often found to use them to travel around Merseyside transporting drugs and weapons.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: “An electric bike has been seized following anti-social behaviour in an Anfield park this afternoon, Tuesday August 19.

“Just after 3pm we received a report that two males were riding an electric bike precariously in Stanley Park with families in the vicinity.

“Officers attended and seized a electric bike and two 12-year-old boys were detained and taken home to their parents.

“If you see any illegal use of e-bikes, e-scooters, or electric motorcycles, please report it to as soon as possible.”

Operation Gears is Merseyside Police’s response to the illegal use of electric and electrically assisted bikes by criminals, who often steal them to travel around Merseyside transporting drugs and weapons.
