Hundreds of people queued to be the first inside the new Bargain Basket, in Daisy Lane just off Whalley Old Road in Daisyfield.

The store will also house the new Al Fajr Restaurant and offers free parking to shoppers.

This was the second Bargain Basket to open in Blackburn following the launch of the first at the top of East Park Road.

Management also revealed they had big plans for the brand and were already looking at eight more sites across the region and the UK.

MP for Blackburn, Adnan Hussain, joined council leader Phil Riley and 10 local councillors at the ribbon cutting. There was also a violinist and fire breathing acts alongside free samosas and other delicacies for eager shoppers.

The project is believed to have cost around £2m and has created 35 jobs for people in the town.

The site itself was the former Cob Wall Working Men’s Club and had lain empty for a number of years.

The new store includes everything from fresh and canned food products, a frozen food section to a huge halal meat stall at the back of the store.

There are also stationery and clothes sections.

General Store manager D Adams said the store hoped to cater for as many shoppers as possible with a huge variety of products on the 10,000 square foot development.

He said: “We at Bargain Basket have a dream and a plan to open more sites across the country and the EU.

“The whole idea is for customers to be able to come and find whatever they need. Everything from food to health and beauty products.

“Inside people can find a huge variety of products. We wanted to cater for as many shoppers as we could.

“We have a cash machine nearby which is free. We designed all our shops to fit the customers’ requirements.”

The site required a lot of work.

Mr Adams said: “This building was derelict for decades. We had to do a lot of work and were basically starting from scratch.

“It was a complete overhaul but we are delighted with the finished modern look.

“The build took about three and half months to finish so it was a great result.”

He said he was “proud” to have worked with the job centre and the local council to ensure people close to the store were first in line for the jobs.

He said: “We did not go through big job sites we kept it local and we went to the job centre, the council and Newground. And they helped us massively.

“We wanted the jobs to go to local people and people who love close by. It was important for us to be part of the community we serve.

“We would to thank everyone for their support in this new venture.”
