Fairfax House in Castle Road provides care for older people including those living with dementia, mental health conditions, physical disabilities and sensory impairments.

It was rated Good overall following an inspection in August.

Inspectors found people were cared for by staff who had been recruited safely and had the skills and knowledge needed to support residents effectively.

The report highlighted strong leadership at the home, with staff describing manager Mandy Pearcey as approachable and responsive to concerns.

Residents and their families were also highly complimentary about the service.

Inspectors found risks to residents’ safety were properly assessed and monitored, medicines were administered safely and staff received regular safeguarding training.

The report also praised the home’s clinical care. Managers said they were particularly proud that no resident had developed a pressure ulcer, despite some people living at the home being very frail.

People’s health needs were closely monitored, including weight loss, infections and mobility, while referrals to healthcare professionals were made promptly when required.

Residents told inspectors there were enough staff on duty and said call bells were answered quickly.

Inspectors also found residents enjoyed a choice of activities, including music sessions, and were supported to continue hobbies and interests they had before moving into the home.

The report noted staff helped residents access transport and remain involved in the local community, while an accessible garden provided outdoor space during warmer weather.

Residents spoke positively about the food on offer, with one saying: “The food is good,” while another added: “I especially love the puddings.”

The CQC found governance systems were effective in monitoring quality and safety, with additional checks introduced since a change of ownership. A recent mock inspection had also identified areas for improvement which were already being addressed.

In a statement, Fairfax House said it was delighted to have received a Good rating in all categories.
