HAGUE- KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KL) has welcomed its first Airbus A350 at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), marking a significant step in the Dutch carrier’s long-term fleet renewal programme.
The aircraft will support the airline’s intercontinental operations as it works to reduce fuel consumption, lower aircraft noise and improve passenger comfort.
The arrival marks the beginning of a new phase in KLM’s widebody fleet modernisation, following the introduction of Airbus A321neo aircraft on European routes.
The airline plans to use the A350 to replace part of its existing long-haul fleet, while its wider investment programme also covers new-generation aircraft for short-haul, regional and cargo operations.

KLM A350 Fleet Renewal
KLM President and CEO Marjan Rintel described the aircraft’s arrival as an important milestone for the airline and the Netherlands.
She highlighted fleet renewal as a practical way to improve operational efficiency while reducing the environmental impact of aviation around airports.
The Airbus A350 uses approximately 25% less fuel than previous-generation aircraft, according to KLM.
Its noise footprint is also around 40% smaller, potentially reducing the noise experienced by communities near airports during take-offs and landings.
The aircraft will gradually replace part of KLM’s current intercontinental fleet over the coming years.
KLM has already introduced 17 Airbus A321neos on its European network, while Boeing 787 aircraft and Embraer E2 jets operated by KLM Cityhopper also form part of its broader fleet renewal strategy.

A350 Cabin And Seating
KLM’s first Airbus A350 has a total capacity of 331 passengers across three travel classes. The cabin comprises 271 Economy Class seats, 26 Premium Comfort Class seats and 34 World Business Class seats.
The aircraft is designed to provide a quieter cabin and an improved onboard environment, supporting passenger comfort on long-haul journeys.
Its introduction will give KLM another modern aircraft type as the airline updates the experience offered across its intercontinental network.
The certification process for the A350’s World Business Class seats is also progressing. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has approved the relevant test results, allowing the seat certification process to begin.
This marks an important step in completing the approval requirements for the aircraft’s business-class seating.

Dutch Art Inspires Names
KLM has chosen famous Dutch paintings as the inspiration for naming its Airbus A350 aircraft, connecting the new fleet with the Netherlands’ cultural heritage.
The first aircraft is named The Night Watch, the celebrated painting by Rembrandt van Rijn displayed at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum.
The airline plans to name its second A350 Girl with a Pearl Earring, referencing the renowned painting by Johannes Vermeer.
The naming theme reflects KLM’s Dutch identity while giving its new aircraft names associated with internationally recognised works of art.
KLM is investing €7 billion in fleet renewal, covering the Airbus A350 for passenger operations, the A350F for cargo services, Airbus A321neos, Embraer E2 aircraft and Boeing 787s.
The programme is intended to modernise the airline’s fleet while improving fuel efficiency, reducing noise and supporting its future operations.
