In a special anniversary edition of Biohazard 30th Special Mook, Capcom executive producer Jun Takeuchi explained in detail the studio’s decision to begin the wave of modern remakes with the second game, rather than the original. According to the developer, the key factor was the concern that the first game’s concentrated, stoic horror could prove too specific and alien to a wide range of modern gamers.
The original Resident Evil placed a heavy emphasis on the intimate atmosphere of a closed mansion, a constant lack of resources, and strict survival restrictions, creating what was called stoic horror. Studio management expressed reasonable doubts that such a classic narrative pace would resonate with a younger generation of players accustomed to more dynamic scenarios and cinematic presentation.
Furthermore, the massive Raccoon City infestation in Resident Evil 2 represents the de facto starting point for the entire franchise. Capcom’s management believed that immersing an entire metropolis in a catastrophe was the ideal way to introduce a new audience to the series’ origins, a move that paid off and set the direction for modern remakes.
