Esk Avenue was impassable on Friday evening during the incident.
Residents reported that a manhole cover had burst releasing a significant amount of water into the road.
It came during a period of heavy and persistent rainfall. Residents of Esk say that such periods have been causing flooding on the street for 50 years or more.
Linda Bell, a resident, said that a metal object was protruding from the flood waters in the middle of the road following the damage. She believes it was likely the cover.
Ms Bell said that the road was flooded and not passable during the incident.
Although it was narrowly avoided on this occasion, residents of Esk Avenue have previously seen flooding within their properties during periods of heavy rainfall.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) attended the incident and the issue was reported to Cumberland Council, the Environment Agency, and United Utilities.
United Utilities attended in the evening and conducted a follow up visit the next morning in better light, finding that the faulty infrastructure below was ‘not their property’.
Flooding was reported elsewhere in Whitehaven with floodwater gathering in the road at the A5094 junction outside the Bransty Arch.
Flooding was also reported on the A596 at Dunmail Park in Workington during the heavy rainfall.
Cumberland Council was contacted for comment.
