The Drumchapel actor appeared on America’s Late Night with Seth Meyers this week to recall an incident where he thought about evoking his Glasgow roots after an altercation at the Toronto Film Festival.
During the eleven-day event, McAvoy was sitting with fellow producers when they noticed a man being kicked out from the bar.
According to the film star, the out-on-control man in his rage then swung for the first man in his vicinity – McAvoy.
Speaking on the late show, he said: “He’d been really he was behaving badly. He drank too much and he was getting ejected by the bouncer and as he was walking past me I had my back to him.
“He was coming past he just cold clocked the first guy he could reach and he smacked me as hard as he could in the back of the head.”
McAvoy said he went from “zero to ninety” before his fellow producers could grab him and calm him down.
However, the drunken man didn’t appear done with the altercation as he declared “I’m from Mexico.”

Explaining the rest of the story, McAvoy said: “He came at me and he did this thing. I don’t know if you’ve ever been in a fight and like it used to happen a lot when you were kids, but it still happens as adults apparently, which is you’re in a fight with somebody and they start telling you where they’re from.
“They’re not telling you ‘I’m going to mess you up.’ He goes like, ‘I’m from Mexico.’
“I’m thinking how ridiculous and then at the exact same time going well, ‘I’m from Drumchapel'”.”
