There’s still over a year until Sony stops making discs, so it’s no real surprise to see Forza Horizon 6 commit to physical media.

The PS5 port of the acclaimed open world racer is officially launching on 26th January, and dev Playground has committed to a boxed release.

“Is there going to be a physical release?” it asked rhetorically on social media. “Yes!”

The catch, however, is that like most Microsoft games, a download will be required. It’s unclear how much data will actually be included on the disc, but if it’s like other Xbox Game Studios outings, the Blu-ray itself will likely be little more than a launcher.

Is there going to be a physical disc? Yes!

To be fair, the game takes up almost 150GB of storage on the Xbox Series X|S, and the PS5 version will likely occupy a similar amount of space. Sony’s discs can hold up to about 100GB, so two Blu-rays would have been required to include all of the data here.

I have seen attitudes begin to soften on so-called ‘Game Key Discs’ of late, however. Some people feel, in the aftermath of PlayStation’s decision to stop making physical media, these are better than nothing.

My personal opinion is that racing games fit into that live service, pick-up and play category, where I’m going to want it installed on my console at all times. But each to their own.
