A hospital worker from Plymouth came face to face with a wallaby in the car park of the hospital he works at in Cornwall after a busy night shift.

Lee Honeywill, who lives in Sherford, was just finishing his 11pm to 7am shift at Liskeard Hospital on Sunday morning (October 11) when he spotted the animal, much to his surprise.

Lee, who is an advanced clinical practitioner for Kernow Health and also works at Knowle House Surgery in Plymouth, told PlymouthLive: “I finished my shift and when I went to drive away, I checked my side mirrors and there, staring at me, was this marsupial, who I had only ever seen before in Animal Kingdom in Florida.

“After a long night shift, I did a double take given my tiredness and what I thought I was looking at. I got out of my car to take a picture before he hopped away at speed across the car park, to nearby woodland.

“I am sure it was a red necked wallaby, usually only found in warmer climates. So it’s obviously a rare sight. But I did manage to snap him on my phone.”

Lee’s photo shows the animal looking right at him, just a few cars away from where his car was parked in the car park.

This latest sighting comes after CornwallLive reported that a wallaby had been filmed hopping around a Liskeard industrial estate back in June.

Video footage captured by a worker at the Liskeard Business Park in Quimperle Way, off the A390, who had been on his way to work when he spotted the marsupial looking lost.

People in a local Facebook group, in which the video was shared, have since been wondering where the wallaby has escaped from and how it ended up in Liskeard.

Local animal park Porfell Wildlife Park and Sanctuary, which is located at Trecangate, Lanreath outside Liskeard, said it had been contacted by people about the escaped wallaby.

However in a post on its own Facebook it confirmed all its animals were accounted for. It said: “We are aware of a wallaby on the loose in the Liskeard area. All of our wallabies are accounted for and are safe in their field.”

It’s not the first time wallabies have been spotted hopping around in Cornwall.

A wallaby was previously captured on camera appearing unphased as it made its way down the A39, near Newquay at around 10.30pm on August 22, 2024.

Sadly that Newquay-spotted wallaby was later discovered dead by the side of the road after being hit by a car. The incident was reported to Devon and Cornwall Police who said the animal was reported lying dead by the side of the A39 on August 26, 2024 and was dropped off at a local vet.

Other wallabies have also reportedly been seen around mainly eastern areas of Cornwall over the years.
