The Barbastelle bat, later named Briony, was found at Orchard House Care Home by head of maintenance Brian, who is also a keen conservationist.

He contacted the Isle of Wight Bat Hospital for guidance, and the bat was identified as a female Barbastelle, a particularly rare woodland bat.

Brian said: “When I found her, I knew the best thing to do was leave her undisturbed and get the right people involved.

“It was fantastic to find out that she was healthy enough to be released, and even better to know that she flew off safely.”

Briony was cared for by the Bat Hospital team and volunteers, who monitored her health, weighed her, and fed her until she was strong enough to return to the wild.

During her short stay, she was given four large mealworms.

Once she showed signs of recovery, she was released at dusk in an arboretum near the care home.
