Fire crews were called to the river near the B&B Hotel on Wednesday after reports that what appeared to be a porpoise had been seen in the water.

The animal was reported to be in the stretch of river close to the town centre, attracting attention from passers-by and onlookers.

It is not yet known exactly what species the animal is, although witnesses believe it could be a porpoise. Emergency services attended the scene to assess the situation and monitor the animal’s welfare.

Harbour porpoises are usually found in coastal waters around the UK, but they can occasionally travel into estuaries and tidal rivers.

The River Gipping becomes the tidal River Orwell downstream of Stoke Bridge, providing a route from the North Sea into the heart of Ipswich.

Anyone who spots a marine mammal in difficulty is advised not to approach it and to contact the appropriate rescue organisations.
