An urgent recall has been issued a milk that ‘may cause illness’ if consumed. It is feared the dairy product could be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.
The Tweedvale Dairies reduced-fat milk is sold at stores across Australia, including independent retailers and IGA stores. The recall covers one and two litre bottles with a use-by-date of October 21, 2026.
Food Standards Australia New Zealand has warned customers not to drink the milk and to return it to the store where it was purchased for a full refund. The recall claims that “food products contaminated with microbial (E. coli) may cause illness if consumed.”
Escherichia coli, known as E. coli, is a type of bacteria commonly found in the intenstines of people and animals. Although most strains can be harmless, some can cause illness.
These harmful strains can spread through contaminated food and water. If contaminated products are consumed they can cause diarrhoea, stomach cramps and vomiting.
E. coli can also cause urinary tract infections if the bacteria enter the urinary system. Food Standards Australia New Zealand said pathogenic E. coli could spread through contaminated food or water, including when food comes into contact with animal faeces or unclean equipment during production or handling.
The NHS say that symptoms usually appear two to four days after infection and typically last for around a week. Anyone who has consumed the milk already and is concerned about their health should make sure they contact a medical professional.
