The only LIV Golf team that’s remained consistent throughout the league’s existence is about to be broken up…
As the golf world waits eagerly for Bryson DeChambeau to make his next move, an end of an era is coming for his Crushers GC team on LIV Golf.
Charles Howell III, Paul Casey and Anibarn Lahiri have completed DeChambeau’s unchanged Crushers lineup since the team was launched four years ago. But change is afoot on the breakaway league, and Howell III is now anticipated to reject the terms for LIV 2.0.
The Sports Business Journal‘s Josh Carpenter reports that Howell III is now plotting a path to the DP World Tour instead of signing up to the league’s proposed relaunch.
The American has made almost $35 million across his four years on the breakaway league, winning once in Mexico in 2023. He has no status to play on the European circuit so cannot join as a member in 2027.
But the 47-year-old could benefit from the new deals being offered by Wentworth officials to LIV players.
On the condition they don’t join LIV 2.0, some of the league’s players are in talks over a contract that will guarantee them a specific number of invites to DP World Tour events next season, based on their perceived value to the circuit.
It is three years until Howell, a three-time PGA Tour winner, will be eligible to play on the over-50s PGA Tour Champions circuit.
LIV have until October 25 to secure enough player commitments for its investors, BC Partners, to go through with a $300m cash injection, though that deadline could be extended.
So far, three LIV players have publicly declared their intentions to stay next season.
