Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) which runs King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford, will be cancelling the staff hopper bus between the two hospitals from January 2027.
The decision has been taken to aid the trust in making a saving of £40 million this financial year.
Fiona Wheeler, BHRUT’s interim chief executive, said: “We’re sorry we’re having to cut the shuttle bus that our staff use to travel between Queen’s and King George hospitals.
“It’s one of the difficult decisions we’ve had to make to save £40m this financial year. The removal of the shuttle bus will save around £273,000 a year and it won’t directly impact patients.
“Our staff will be able to travel between the hospitals on the new TfL Superloop bus service which runs regularly, seven days a week.”
In April 2025, then chief executive Matthew Trainer said the trust had been instructed to make cuts after already saving £30m two years in a row.
He warned it would be a “very, very hard year” and the cuts would take the trust into “radically new territory”.
