Rhys Morgan recently captured a rare aerial view of a fin whale lunge feeding in the Celtic Deeps, an area of deep water in the Celtic Sea southwest of Pembrokeshire.

Sharing the video on social media, Rhys said: “Fin whales lunge feeding in the Celtic Deeps.

“I’ve been lucky enough to see this incredible behaviour several times on my ventures, but I’ve never managed to capture it on the drone, until last week.

“The second largest whale species in the world making us feel just a little bit smaller out in the middle of the Celtic Deeps.”

The spectacular footage shows the enormous whale surging towards the surface with its mouth open to engulf huge volumes of water packed with prey, a feeding technique known as lunge feeding.

Fin whales are the second-largest animals on Earth after the blue whale and can grow to lengths of more than 20 metres.

While sightings are relatively rare, they are known to visit waters off west Wales and the Celtic Sea, where rich feeding grounds attract a variety of marine wildlife.

Rhys’ footage offers a remarkable glimpse into a behaviour few people ever witness, highlighting the rich marine life found just beyond the Pembrokeshire coastline.
