Founder Eric Migicovsky shows off a major redesign for the premium smartwatch

Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky has revealed the final design for the Pebble Time 2*, the premium flagship model in his company’s revival of the iconic smartwatch brand.

Unveiled in a detailed blog post, the new look is a significant and stylish departure from the preliminary renders shown when the project launched earlier this year.

That was initially done under the brand name ‘Core Devices’, but Migicovsky also confirmed last month that the team working on the revival project has been able to recover the Pebble trademark, hence the name change.

The redesigned watch now features a more refined, curved case constructed from 316 stainless steel on both the front and back. The display is protected by a flat, hardened glass lens, a change intended to reduce reflections.

In a clear nod to the brand’s heritage, the stainless steel buttons are now knurled with a textured finish, just like on the classic Pebble Time Steel.

Migicovsky also confirmed that four different colorways are being planned, with pre-order customers able to make their selection once the options are finalized.

RGB backlight, compass, and a second microphone

Alongside the aesthetic overhaul, several new hardware features have been confirmed for the final specification.

The watch will now include a built-in compass sensor and a second microphone, which could be used for an environmental noise cancellation feature.

A more advanced multicolor RGB LED backlight has also been added (and detailed in Migicovsky’s full design breakdown, shown above), which will allow users to control the color temperature, potentially having it change automatically throughout the day.

These new additions build on the core features previously announced, including the 1.5-inch, 64-color e-paper touchscreen, an estimated 30-day battery life, heart rate and activity tracking, a speaker, and waterproofing (final IP rating to be determined).

The Pebble Time 2* is available to pre-order for $225. Migicovsky also confirmed that those who have already pre-ordered the cheaper Pebble 2 Duo will be given the option to upgrade their order to a Time 2* by paying the price difference without losing their place in the queue.
