Scotland’s first-ever baby sloth has celebrated World Sloth Day with a special floral feast at Edinburgh Zoo.

Atty, who made history when he was born at the capital’s zoo in May, enjoyed some of his favourite treats alongside his mum Feira to mark the occasion on Tuesday (20 October).

Keepers at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) prepared the tasty surprise for the pair, while Atty’s dad Nico apparently preferred to spend the celebrations having a nap.

The youngster, born on 11 May, became the first sloth ever born in Scotland and was named in honour of legendary wildlife broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, who celebrated his 100th birthday just days before Atty’s arrival.

His name also pays tribute to a 2017 interview in which Sir David revealed that, given the chance to become an animal for a day, he would choose a sloth.

Atty lives with his parents in Edinburgh Zoo’s specially designed Sloth House, which provides the warm and humid conditions the animals need.

The family are Linne’s two-toed sloths, a species native to the tropical rainforests of South America.

World Sloth Day takes place annually on 20 October and aims to raise awareness of the animals and the threats they face in the wild, including habitat loss and hunting.

Visitors hoping to catch a glimpse of Atty and his family can find more information at edinburghzoo.org.uk.
