With the PGA Tour season coming to a close, several surprising names need big results to avoid losing their playing rights…
The golf season may be winding down but the stakes on the PGA Tour are high.
Only the top 100 golfers after the FedEx Cup Fall Series secure their full cards for next year, while the top 125 are given conditional status.
PGA Tour players at risk of losing their cards
And with only a handful of events remaining, these are the surprise names on the verge of losing their playing rights for the 2027 season…
Lucas Glover – 108th
It seems inconceivable that the 2009 US Open champion would lose his card, especially after the renaissance that saw him win twice in a matter of weeks three years ago. But the 47-year-old is now fighting to retain full status after an abject year where he has failed to capitalize on his position in Signature Events.
Luke Clanton – 137th
Before Jackson Koivun it was Luke Clanton who was supposed to be America’s next superstar. That of course could still transpire, but this was a year when the youngster went backwards. Clanton made transition to the top table look seamless as a college player, threatening the leaders numerous times as an amateur. But in the paid ranks he’s made 10 out of 21 cuts this season and is in danger of being demoted to the Korn Ferry Tour.
Marco Penge – 110th
It never seemed likely Penge would be fighting for his PGA Tour status after earning the top card from the DP World Tour. While he misses his home circuit, his failure to make his mark Stateside so far can be put down to myriad mitigating circumstances. Penge has been plagued by health issues while relocating to the US and welcoming a second child. A strong finish to the season is required for Penge to maintain his momentum in the hopes of launching a Ryder Cup bid.
Rasmus Hojgaard – 113th
The 2025 European Ryder Cup player has had a torrid run, withdrawing from both the Biltmore Championship and the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, while missing the cut at the Bank of Utah Championship. Right now, Hojgaard looks to be the most likely dispensable from the winning team at Bethpage as we approach another Ryder Cup year.
Joel Dahmen – 128th
Dahmen was in contention at Torrey Pines at the start of the season before he was blown away by Justin Rose. Back in February, it seemed the lovable American had something to build on. But it has been another struggle for Dahmen, who has this year played with conditional status. Salvaging a place in the top 125 again would at least guarantee Dahmen a chance to go again next season.
Neal Shipley – 123rd
Another character we know well from Netflix’s Full Swing, Shipley has had a mini-revival after appearing overawed on the PGA Tour. The two-time Korn Ferry Tour winner has given himself a chance of grasping status for next year after top-ten finishes in two recent Fall Series events. He is just about adjusting to life on the most unforgiving circuit of them all, but is it too late?
