Star Wars’ Daisy Ridley will be heading a new reboot of a classic sci-fi movie and TV show. Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea originally started as a 1961 film directed by Irwin Allen (The Poseidon Disaster), before the director created a TV series in 1964 on ABC.

Both the movie and the TV series followed Commander Lee Crane on board the nuclear submarine, the Seaview, for its maiden voyage. The film sees Crane and the sub put to the test by a meteor shower, while the TV series featured more sci-fi elements, including aliens, sea monsters and dinosaurs.

In both versions, Lee Crane is portrayed as male, with actors David Hedison and Robert Sterling having played the character, respectively.

Now, Paramount+ has ordered a reboot of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea with Ridley cast as Crane, as well as executively producing the new series.

According to Variety, Ridley’s Crane is “pulled into a classified government program after a catastrophic Arctic expedition claims the life of her twin sister”.

“At the center of the program is the USS Seaview, a retro-futuristic submarine found entombed in the ice, marked with symbols from a history that shouldn’t exist, and it powers up only when Lee steps aboard,” the synopsis continues.

“Thrust into command of a pressure-cooker crew and an uneasy alliance with government power brokers, Lee leads Seaview on daring undersea missions to contain mysterious forces leaking into our world, all while uncovering a hidden truth about the oceans, an erased chapter of human history and the once-thought mythical city of Atlantis.”

Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (Batman Forever, I Am Legend) is set to write and executive produce the reboot alongside Ridley, while WandaVision’s Matt Shakman is on board as director and executive producer.

Legendary Television will also produce alongside the Irwin Allen estate. Variety further reports that the series has been in the works for months before the recent changes at its parent company Skydance.

However, an expected release date is yet to be announced.

Elsewhere, Ridley, who is best known for her role as Rey in Star Wars, will be starring alongside Johnny Depp, Rupert Grint and Sam Claflin in Ebenezer.
