The family of a ‘hardworking’ Liverpool man who died in a horror crash at roadworks on a main road near Bury have paid a heartfelt tribute to him. The crash happened on Rochdale Road in Edenfield at around 11.20am on Monday (October 26). Police cordoned off the road near the junction with Plunge Road as emergency services attended.

The crash involved a green Deutz Tractor, a Ford transit van and a Mercedes Dropside lorry, police said. It happened at the site of some ‘temporary utility works’.

A site worker suffered fatal injuries in the incident. He has now been named as 62-year-old Patrick Whelan, from Liverpool, reports the Manchester Evening News.

His family said they were ‘devastated’ following his death. In a tribute issued through Lancashire Police, Patrick’s family said: “Patrick has sadly been taken from us after being involved in an accident at work.

“He will sadly be missed by all his family and work colleagues. We are devastated. He was such a hard worker and a jolly man x x.”

A second worker, a man aged in his 30s, was also injured and was taken to hospital from the scene. His injuries were not life-threatening, Lancashire Police said.

An investigation into the crash is continuing. Officers want to speak to any witnesses, or anyone with information.

“We are again asking for anyone who may have seen the collision or passed the temporary road works where contractors were erecting telegraph poles at this location to get in touch”, a force spokesperson said in a post on the Rossendale Police Facebook page.
