What is salmonella?

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people who are infected may have fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare cases, the bacteria can get into the bloodstream and cause more severe illnesses, including infected aneurysms, infections of the heart lining and arthritis.
