The Savoy, on Regent Street in Swindon town centre, was put up for sale in May 2026, and was advertised on Rightmove as a public house in a ‘busy high street location.’

Now, just six months on, the pub has confirmed it will close imminently.

Staff members at The Savoy have confirmed that Wetherspoons will hold its last day of trading on Sunday, November 8.

It will not reopen for service on Monday morning, November 9.

Staff at the pub told the Swindon Advertiser they couldn’t comment yet on what would happen to the building or who it has been sold it.

“We haven’t been told anything by head office yet, just that we will be closing next weekend,” said one worker.

However, in September, Citifaith International Church announced it wanted to try and raise £145,000 to buy the Wetherpoons and expand the church.

Citifaith currently owns the floor above the pub and uses it as a place of worship.

Both Wetherspoons and Citifaith have now been contacted regarding the upcoming pub closure.

Reacting to the news, customers inside the Savoy said they were ‘heartbroken’ and ‘angry’ to see it go.

“It’s just a huge shame for the town. I’m angry they’ve let it sell to be honest,” said punter Rob, who will be celebrating his final day in the pub next weekend.

“We all love coming here and necking some pints, it’s just a good meeting point and it’s such a big part of Swindon.

“I know we’ve got the other Wetherspoons down the other end but it’s not the same. This one’s got a better atmosphere and less trouble I’d say. I don’t want it to go. It’s heartbreaking really.”

Catherine and Ben, who were enjoying a pizza at The Savoy on Sunday, November 1, added: “It does feel like the end of an era really.

“The Savoy’s always been a good cheap option in town for food or drink and it’s close to the theatre so we’ve used it a few times for pre-drinks before going to see a show.

“It has got a long history in Swindon though so I’m interested to see what it gets turned into next.

“I just hope it’s something beneficial to the town. If it becomes another one of those vape shops or charity shops or something I’ll be gutted, we’ve got enough of them as it is.”
