Aug. 25, 2025 — In 2025, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) created the BSC AI Institute with the mission of promoting research and innovation in AI and positioning BSC as one of the leading centers in Europe in the convergence of supercomputing and AI.
In May of the same year, researcher Ricardo Baeza-Yates went on to direct the Institute and lead its operational management. After this period, it has been decided by agreement with Baeza-Yates not to give continuity to his position due to unfulfilled mutual expectations. This decision will be effective from Aug, 31, 2025.
BSC will soon begin the process of searching for a new director of the Institute. The selected person will have among their missions to draw up the strategy for the promotion of AI innovation in BSC in strategic sectors such as biomedicine, finance, climate or public services, as well as talent training or the coordination of top-level international projects.
The BSC has a critical mass in AI of more than 320 AI professionals applied to multiple disciplines, and has 450 scientific projects underway, of which more than 150 are in the field of AI. In addition, the BSC has the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer, one of the most advanced infrastructures to promote AI in Europe.
The BSC wants to thank the work developed and the collaboration provided during these months by Baeza-Yates and wishes him the best in all future professional projects.
